August 23 - Day 3

Today Evelyn received her third daily dose of steroids, an antibiotic (they like to give this in advance of her getting sicker) and an antacid to help with acid reflux that comes with the medications. After Evelyn's nap in the morning we noticed her shirt was wet around her port IV and most of her right side was swollen. We called in our nurse and sure enough the needle had slipped out and the IV fluid was leaking under her skin (reason why her right side had swollen). It was just saline solution in her IV so the leaking fluid wasn't a problem and the swelling would go down in the next couple days to a week. When the chemotherapy starts its very unsafe to have the needle slip and that fluid leaking under the skin. It was best they put the needle back in as soon as possible - the nurse put numbing cream on the area and came back in half an hour with a team of nurses to put the needle back in. Once again our little girl was a trooper and was smiling once it was all done. Normally the port IV is inserted higher on the chest but lately, on girls, the doctors have been inserting them below the breast and off to the right side to prevent a scar from being visible - Evelyn's is lower down but because of where it is and how active she is it often gets hit or yanked therefore causing the needle to come out a lot easier then if it was placed higher on her chest. Keeping in mind that Evelyn's needle had come out on its own 3 times in the last 3 days we decided to ask our nurse and doctors if there was something that could be done; possibly redoing the port and moving it higher up on her chest - not ideal but in the long run would save us some hassle and worry. After talking with the surgeons today, by the sounds of it the port IV will be taken out and reinserted higher up on Evelyn's chest. This had us a little frustrated - not something we wanted to put our little girl through twice but we hope going through this it will be more comfortable for Evelyn and easier access for future treatments. We think the plan is to have it done tomorrow morning so her chemotherapy can still be administered in the afternoon and treatment can stay on track - we will see what the morning brings! Her blood pressure has also been high the last couple days - this can be due to the steroids given but also a sign of kidney problems. She went for an ultrasound in the afternoon but everything checked out fine. The nurse gave her some medication tonight to lower her blood pressure and continue to keep an eye on it in the coming days. Days like today can be discouraging, when things don't go as planned but we continue to lean on the Lord for our strength; casting all our anxieties and worries on Him.

Psalm 94:18,19
"When I said "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."
