September 1

It's nearing the end of the summer and we've been busy packing in the fun around treatment and steroids. We were able to enjoy some holidays with family, a Blue Jays game in Toronto and lots of parks days.

All packed and ready to go -

This past week we also took the girls to the dentist for a check up where we discovered Evelyn has three cavities. Our dentist here in town and I decided it would be better dealt with her team at Mac. Once we got home I called clinic to inform them and they suggested we see the same dentist Evelyn saw last year when she got a cavity filled. He will be able to determine how bad they are, if they need to be filled and whether or not he can do it in his office or under anesthesia at Mac. A simple cavity to another can be a source of infection for Evelyn - something that can bring a slew of problems and something we want to prevent at all costs. Even though Evelyn will be done treatment in the next few weeks she will still be considered immune compromised for a little while until her body can work it's immunity back up by itself. So in the end it may be best to get them filled anyways.
It's also nearing the end of treatment! We were given our 'last chemo' date - September 24th is the big day! This past Thursday we finished Evelyn's second to last steroid round - only one more to go! It's hard to believe and fully comprehend that there is an end in sight. Cancer and treatment has become such a norm in our life and the thought of it all coming to an end is a little nerve wracking - this will be a big change for us as we enter the "aftercare" chapter of our journey. It's hard to believe we are preparing for the end - one still filled with appointments, blood work, side effects, worries and unknowns. But on the other side, we have so much to be excited about and thankful for. Evelyn has responded well to treatment and we hope and pray all that continues once treatment is finished. September is bringing a lot of uncertainties, new beginnings and happy endings - it's going to be quite the emotional rollercoaster for our family. We prepare for Charlotte's first day of kindergarten and adjusting to a school routine next week as well as prepping for our walk for cancer. A huge thanks goes out to all those that have helped us reach our $12,000 goal, we are overwhelmed and so grateful at such an amount of money; money that will go towards and make a difference in research in childhood cancer. On September 12th we will be walking 25km in honour of our little lion. I will hopefully post a short update once we are done :). Wish us luck! :)
